Swedish massage is a bodywork therapy which involves manipulating the soft tissues of the body. It is a combination of massage movements such as effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, vibration and friction Effleurage is long smooth gliding movements over the surface of the body. Effleurage is beneficial for promoting relaxation, increasing blood and lymphatic flow which helps to improve the muscle condition. Petrissage involves kneading, compression, friction and squeezing the muscle. It is beneficial for relaxing the muscles, stimulating lymphatic drainage and breaking down knots in the muscle. Tapotement is fast paced rhythmic percussion techniques such as cupping movements, beating and hacking. Tapotement is beneficial for improving sluggish blood circulation, stimulating and improving muscle tone and invigorating the client. The level of touch in Swedish massage varies and can be light, gentle or deep depending on the person who is receiving the massage and the type of massage movements used.
The aims of Swedish massage are to aid health and wellbeing by relaxing the entire body both mentally and physically. Main aims are reducing stress levels, easing muscle tension and increasing blood supply and oxygen to the massaged areas. Swedish massage can also be beneficial for relieving pain in overworked muscles, reducing anxiety levels and may help to improve sleep patterns.
